Showstoppers ‘Spitvalve’ from Cork win Coca-Cola Blastbeat Munster Final and secure a place in the National Final in Tripod on 17th May.


Student rockers turned out in their droves for the Coca-Cola Blastbeat Munster Final at the Half Moon on Sunday, 6th April 2008. Six bands from secondary schools around County Cork and Limerick battled it out for a place in the National Coca-Cola Blastbeat Final in Tripod on 17th May 2008 to be in with a chance to win a record deal for their band and 5,000 euro for the school.

The young talented band ‘Spitvalve’ who are from Cork City were overall winners of the competition. ‘Spitvalve’ are promoted by ‘Audio Circus’, the transition year mini music company from Ballincollig Community School who are competing in Coca-Cola Blastbeat.


The overall standard of talent was exceptional and runners up on the day were
‘Mucky’s Wall’ who are also promoted by students from Ballincollig Community
School, they will go through to the heats in Tripod on the 17th May.

‘Spitvalve’ put on an incredible performance to the capacity crowd at the Half Moon.
They describe their music as ‘sca and punk’, the band members are Shane
Courtney (17) from Carrigaline on vocals and saxophone, Clonakilty lads Adrian
Handly (17) on trumpet and lead singer Brian Scully (16), drummer Adam Forde (17)
and Aoibheann Murphy (15) on trombone. ‘Spitvalve’ performed three original songs
‘Bangin’ End’, ‘Tomorrow’s Another Day’ and ‘Cheer Up Kid’.

Runners up, ‘Mucky’s Wall’ are Kieran O’Callaghan (170 on guitar, Darragh Kearns-
Hayes (17) on keyboard and brothers Rory (17) and Padraig Finn (15) on bass and
drums from Ballinhassis, Cork. Alternative rockers ‘Ape Escape’ from Colaiste an
Chraobhin in Fermoy delighted the crowd with their performance while pop band
‘Overplay’ represented Davis College in Mallow. Schull Community College saw
their Indie band ‘Pushplay’ from Clonakilty perform three original songs, ‘Keep on
Knocking’, ‘Circle’ and ‘Light’.
